"Those who stop being better stop being good." - Oliver Cromwell
One of the joys of my job is the time I get to spend picking the brains of some of the most successful business people in the industry. There are probably few differences. But if I had asked contractors 12 months ago what they expected their market to look like today, many would have predicted tremendous change to have taken place.
Over the past few years, certain commonalities have emerged from companies that are among the best run in the industry. One philosophy, in particular, resonates loudest – that’s the importance of investing in employees.
The importance of such an investment was driven home to me when I had a chance to visit Environmental Care in late 1996. In explaining that company’s organizational chart, Bruce Wilson, president of the $200-million company, pointed out that the employees from the field should be at the top of the chart because they are the actual sources of revenue for the company.
Regardless, many green industry companies view expenses for training, benefits and employee development as little more than unnecessary overhead. And, to be honest, that’s understandable.
Employees will continue to work and generate revenues without training. And, so long as they offer the basic benefits that employees won’t work without, companies will have employees.
But will such companies grow? Will they have satisfied customers? Are their employees going to stay with the company for a career or recommend friends join those workforces?
Of course not. Nonetheless, companies resist investing in their workforce because they don’t view such expenses in the proper light – as an investment in their own future.
Companies not training their employees should consider how much benefit may come from spending $1,000 to train 10 employees on customer service and communication. Think about how many different customers or potential customers those 10 employees come in contact with over the course of one year and how easily that $1,000 could be turned into new business.
Add to that the value of training in areas such as weed control strategies and plant identification, and how long would it take for those employees’ new knowledge to benefit the company?
Most importantly, however, consider the benefits to a company from the development of a healthy and binding corporate culture.
Your employees could walk into your office tomorrow and demand a raise and you’d have little choice but to give it to them in today’s labor market. And why shouldn’t they? What have you done to show them that you value their commitment to your organization and that you appreciate what they do day in and day out?
A commitment to the employees that can help them view their responsibilities as more than just a job, is a must to take a company forward. It is, truly, an investment in your company’s future.
