Rick Barnes was elected chairman of the Georgia Green Industry Association in January. Other newly elected executives include Tony Rogers, vice chairman and Stuart Cofer, treasurer. Anne Coultas was elected president of the Landscape Division of GGIA along with Bobby Flowers, vice president, David Berle, secretary/treasurer, and Arthur Clark and Tony Johnson, board members.

Judges in the 1996 Associated Landscape Contractors of America Exterior Environmental Improvement Awards selected one project for special recognition with a Judges’ Award. Kauai Nursery & Landscaping received the honor for its restoration of the Garden Court area at the Marriott Hotel in Hawaii.

ALCA also released the 1996 Landscape Industry Employee Compensation and Benefits Report complete with data collected from 525 landscape companies nationwide. The report includes information on compensation for executives and employees, as well as details on benefit packages. For more information, call 800/395-2522.

The Composting Council presented the following awards of excellence: Philip Leege, Hi Kellogg Award for Outstanding Service to the Composting Industry; Peter Garnham, Outstanding Composter; Patricia Millner, Rufus Chaney Award for Research Excellence; Ed Maltby, Rodale Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Agricultural Composting; and Mike Merkwan, H. Clark Gregory Award for Outstand-ing Grassroots Efforts to Promote Composting.

Jacob Frodsham received the 1996 James I. FitzGibbon Scholarship from the Professional Lawn Care Association of America, which is cosponsored by LESCO Inc. The Weber State University student of mechanical engineering also works for his father’s company, Frodsham Better Lawns.

The basics of irrigation contracting are now organized into a professional course offered by the Irrigation Association. The two-day course, which will be held throughout 1997, concentrates on financial and personnel management, pricing, accounting and other skills vital to successful irrigation contracting. The IA also recently debuted its own website - www.irrigation.org. The site includes education and certification dates, a roster of certified irrigation specialists, IA publications and links to other irrigation-related websites.

The California Landscape Contractors Association elected its executive board at its annual meeting. The board includes John Redmond, chair; Dave Penry, president; Charles Nunley, president-elect; and vice presidents David Norred, Ken Chase, Fred Hanker and Michael Forsberg.

The Oregon Association of Nurserymen’s Jack Long was awarded the Voice of the Nursery Industry Award by the Portland Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Long’s service to the industry includes terms as president of the American Association of Nurserymen and the OAN.

Dick Chamberllin, Harris Seeds, was elected president of the Atlantic Seedsmen’s Association during the group’s convention held in Newport, R.I. Other association executives incude: Mary Beth Menard, first vice president; Charles Hart, second vice president; and Joe Butwin, secretary.
