Association News: May 1997

The American Association of Nurserymen is preparing to launch a direct mail blitz in an attempt to double the size of its grassroots legislative action network through the Light-house Fund. Each of the AAN’s 49 state associations will mail a solicitation package to their members this summer. The AAN’s research division, the Horticultural Research Institute, created a $50,000 endowment fund with a $10,000 gift from Flower Carpet Roses.

The Associated Landscape Contractors of America have three more Tech/Knowledge Semi-nars: A Comprehensive Interior Training Seminar scheduled for 1997 — June 6 (Houston), July 25 (Rosemount, Minn.) and Aug. 15 (Fairfax, Va.). The one-day programs include plant identification, plant care, pest identification/control and more. The workshop is presented by Linnaea Newman, a training consultant for the interior landscape industry.

Deadlines for ALCA’s 1997 Environmental Improvement Awards are Aug. 15, 1997 for exterior projects and Sept. 19, 1997 for interior projects. For information, call 703/620-6363.

The Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association presented its Life Membership Award to Charles Dahlkemper and Richard Kauffman in honor of their volunteer and leadership contributions to the PLNA.

The Texas Association of Nurserymen elected the following officers for 1997-98: James Harden, chairman; Joe Burks, chair-man-elect; Floyd Trammel, Rick Archie, Charles Britton and Paul Wright, regional directors; and Gary Kinney, allied director.

Beginning in 1998, the Southern Nurserymen Association will hold a joint convention with the American Association of Nurserymen. The World’s Showcase of Horticulture® will be held Aug. 5-9, 1998, in Atlanta. This will be the first joint meeting of the two organizations since 1979.
