And the winner is…

We asked you to send in photos of some of your best work for a contest we were having on Facebook. We want to thank everyone who participated, but in the end their could only be two winners, one who gathered the most likes and one chosen by the L&L staff. Congratulations to the winners, who received a $50 gas card. The pictures and descriptions of the jobs are below.

The most liked
This is a koi pond Arcadia Landscaping completed in 2008. It is a combination of two ponds totaling 32,000 gallons of water. The upper pond is roughly 8,000 gallons and spills over a weir, designed to be walked across, to the lower pond which is roughly 24,000 gallons. The goal was to create a beneficial environment for koi, while creating an aesthetically pleasing feature for the owner. After much research and discussion Arcadia determined how to pipe and filter both ponds, leaving decisions about the project’s aesthetics to be made as construction progressed.

Both ponds are lined with EPDM rubber liners and are piped to a filter pit. A total of 800 gpm of water is pumped to support the filter system and falls of this feature. After the ponds were completed, 60 koi were handpicked in Japan and introduced into the ponds just a few months later.

Editor’s choice
Buck and Sons Landscape installed this water feature with surrounding plantings in a local metro park in Columbus, Ohio. A bench sitting area was made to enjoy the sights and sounds.

Each issue of A Garden Life will explore and celebrate the concept of “life as a garden.”

GIE will publish six issues of A Garden Life in 2012 (March, May, June, July/August, September/October, November/December) exclusively via iTunes, Android Market and the web.

A Garden Life has a companion website, bit.ly/gardenlifeweb, that will offer the magazine app content to consumers who do not yet use tablet technology. The website will include deep databases of horticultural products
