During many of the recent green industry conferences, phrases like "hot plants" and "power perennials" attributed to the popular ornamentals have been frequent topics of discussion. Landscape professionals are pointing to perennials as the No. 1 ornamental for 1999 and the start of the next millenium.
“The last 10 to 15 years has seen an increase in perennial plant use,” stated Tracy DiSabato-Aust, owner, Horticultural Classics & Consultations, Sunbury, Ohio and author of the book The Well-Tended Perennial Garden.
At the American Nursery and Landscape Association Management Clinic, Louisville, Ky., Lynn Cohen, marketing, Sunny Border, Kensington, Conn., and Stephanie Cohen, education director, Waterloo Gardens, Exton and Devon, Penn., had a lot to say about their specific favorites of the bunch.
First, the tag team weeded out a few of the perennials that are hot sellers, but terrible growers: Adjania pacificia “Pink Ice” – Chrysanthemum and Pulmonaria saccharata “David Ward” – Lungwort.
“The Adjania is not pretty and it blooms late,” Stephanie Cohen said. “The Pulmonaria burns and dies quickly. It just doesn’t grow well.”
Then they commented on specific perennials they recommend using in 1999 and 2000.
- Helleborus orientalis “Royal Heritage Strain” – Hellebore. “You can get more money from it than from Black-eyed Susans,” Stephanie Cohen said. “It comes in a variety of pinks and whites – spotted and dark. It’s one of the first plants to bloom because it’s evergreen and it’s very hearty.”
- Heuchera “Bressingham Bronze.” “One of the finest Heucheras on the market today,” Lynn Cohen remarked. “It’s a vigorous grower and the color stays bright.”
- Amsonia hubrechtii – Arkansas Amsonia. “It blooms quickly as a soft, pale blue flower and then it’s gone,” Lynn Cohen noted. “But it has beautiful 5-foot tall foliage that sways in the breeze and looks great with ornamental grasses. In the fall, it’s a golden orange. It also grows well in full or part sun.”
- Tanacetum macrophyllum – Giant Tansy. “You put it in and forget about it,” Lynn Cohen pointed out. “It grows in 4- to 5-foot tall, 3-foot wide clumps. It blooms in May and has an architectural quality. It’s also not bothered by insects or diseases.”
- Nepata faasenii “Walker’s Low” – Catmint. “This looks like lavender,” Lynn Cohen explained. “It’s a shorter plant and grows in a poofy mound. It doesn’t flop like some of the other Nepatas.”
- Agastache foeniculum “Blue Fortune” – Anise Hyssop. “It flowers all summer,” Stephanie Cohen remarked. “It doesn’t get diseases or insects and it attracts butterflies. It also has a great minty smell.”
- Lavendula angustifolia “Hidcote Giant.” – “More heat and drought tolerant than regular lavender,” Lynn Cohen said.
PRESERVING PERENNIALS. In any perennial garden, proper maintenance is the secret to its success. This was the message in DiSabato-Aust’s seminar at New England Grows in Boston, Mass.
“You are doing a disservice to your clients if you don’t teach them to maintain their garden,” DiSabato-Aust indicated.
“Perennials can be used anywhere,” she added. “The important thing is selecting the proper plant for the site. There is one a right one for every site.”
She explained how design considerations may affect the future maintenance needed in a perennial garden.
“It’s important to look at how much time the clients have for maintenance. Also, know how much light the garden will get. If you use the wrong plant in the first place, you have already doubled the maintenance.”
If a contractor is looking for lower-maintenance perennials, there are a few traits that these plants share, which include: a life span of five or more years; cold hardiness; heat, humidity and moisture resistant; insect and disease resistant; non invasive; no heavy fertilizer is needed; no daily deadheading is required.
Lower-maintenance perennials include: Dianthus g. “Bath’s Pink;” Epimedium rubrum; Pulmonaria saccharata.
Higher-maintenance perennials include: Delphinium; Iris (bearded); Leucanthemum x superbum.
In tending to the garden, sometimes dividing a plant is necessary for it to stay healthy. According to DiSabato-Aust, signs that division is needed include: flowers that are getting smaller, a clump that looks like a traffic jam, a clump that opens up in the center, and a plant that has reduced vigor.
Plants that need dividing every one to three years are: Reblooming daylilies; Achillea “Moonshine;” Coreopsis.
Plants that need dividing every 10 years or more include: Baptisia australis; Helleborus orientalis; Platycodon grandiflorus.
