ARCADIA, Fla. - Bethel Farms of Arcadia, Fla., a producer of grass and fertilizer products, offers a lawn repair method that can be more economical and less labor intensive than sod replacement - grass plugs.

According to a release by the company, the United States is estimated to have more than 31 million acres of grass, which is equal to about 50,000 square miles. More than 80 percent of this grass is found in neighborhood lawns, said Bethel Farms, so maintaining a healthy lawn is not only important for aesthetics, it is vital to the environment.

With the winter months fading away, contractors are venturing back to client’s lawns and assessing winter damage that will soon lead to replacement of turf in areas of die off. Contractors have a variety of options, such as reseeding, replacing sod or using grass plugs, but Bethel Farms suggests that plugs are the most viable option for quick patching of turf. The company said that using plugs is less cumbersome than replacing sod and yields quicker results than reseeding.

Bethel Farms introduced its Premium Grass Plugs nearly 16 years ago. The 4-inch grass plugs are inserted into an existing lawn using a plugger tool. The installation of the plugs is simple and usually takes just a short amount of time to repair an average size lawn, said Bethel Farms.

A single plug will grow to match the same coverage area as several square feet of sod, according to the company. Grass plugs are also a fraction of the cost per square foot compared to sod. Bethel Farms said complete coverage can be achieved for less than 10 cents a square foot.

Bethel Farms also touted the importance of maintaining a healthy lawn, as a well-maintained lawn can keep a home cooler on hot days by reducing surface temperatures from 30 to 40 degrees compared with bare soil, and from 50 to 70 degrees cooler than streets and driveways. Researchers have suggested that the healthy landscapes of eight average-sized suburban homes provide the cooling-effect equivalent of 70 tons of air conditioning, according to the company.
