Hoopes Urges Contractors to 'Remain Vigilant'

Exiting PLCAA President Bill Hoopes says farewell, advising association members to build a positive business climate for the industry's future.

I absolutely cannot believe a year has passed since we met in Tampa to begin our “comeback” year. And, for me, that is exactly what 2002 has been – a year to regroup, refresh our message and regain the momentum of pre-September 11th America.

In Tampa, I said to those committed and determined lawn care operators in attendance, “we need to focus the message” and to “communicate the benefits of what we do more effectively than ever before.”

Not only have we done that, we are completing what, for many businesses, will be a record year! And all on the heels of September 11th. Frankly, it’s tough for me to look back at this past year without including the impact of September 11th on all of us. I believe our lawn care service businesses have set an outstanding positive example of what this country is all about. When we are knocked down, we get back up, re-focus and re-commit. I hope that, in your business, that is exactly what took place.

Looking ahead, I see challenges and opportunities. The regulatory climate is no more positive than in years past. Those who would eliminate the prudent use of pest control materials are still out there, well funded and active. So, my parting advice to you (as exiting PLCAA president) is going to be … remain vigilant. Those of us who have spent our working lives in the green industry must do all we can to ensure a positive business climate for the years ahead.

All this brings me to the Legislative Day on the Hill. This year, we had the largest group of businesses ever, walking the halls of Congress in support of your business issues and needs. We did focus our message, as promised. We did get the message across to those who, from a federal and state perspective, impact our ability to operate profitably. I want more of you to take the time and attend our next Day on the Hill – July 14-15, 2003! This event is a key opportunity to do something meaningful for your business’ future. Be there.

My problem has always been finding a way to be brief. I have lots more to say … but I’ll keep it for another day. I intend to continue my PLCAA work in education and legislative affairs.

I thank you all for supporting me this past year – it has been my honor to serve.
