County Executive Andy Spano recently signed legislation amending the Westchester County Home Improvement Licensing Law to require all landscape contractors and gardeners to post on their vehicles their company’s name and address.
The new regulations are to ensure the identity of workers in neighborhoods in the county and to assist the county’s Consumer Protection Department in the enforcement of the licensing law.
“We want residents and others to have an easy way to know who the people are that are doing landscaping and gardening work in their communities,” said Spano. “Trucks and vans moving from home to home in the county without any identification and without any markings can make residents uneasy.”
In addition, said Elaine Price, director of Consumer Protection, “We frequently receive complaints from residents who would like to report illegal dumping of debris or incorrect spraying of pesticides, only to realize that there is no company name on the van.”
The amendments to the licensing law protect both the consumer and the licensed landscape contractors. The New York State Turf & Landscape Association strongly supported the amendments and worked with the county to get the changes enacted.
Consumers can check with the Department of Consumer Protection to see if a landscaper or gardener is licensed by visiting www.westchestergov.com/consumer or by calling (914) 995-2211.
