WALNUT CREEK, Calif. – Valent Professional Products has released an instructional video highlighting the new, basal trunk spray application method for Safari Insecticide. When applied as a basal trunk spray, Safari controls emerald ash borer (EAB) and a wide variety of other pests.
The four-minute video, which can be viewed online at www.valentpro.com/safari, demonstrates how fast and simple it is to apply Safari to ash trees. All a properly equipped and trained applicator has to do is mix 12 oz of Safari per gallon of water in a 2-to-3-gallon hand-pump sprayer and then spray the bark on the lower five feet of a tree trunk until runoff. It only takes 1-to-2 minutes to treat most trees, making the basal trunk spray much less labor intensive than a trunk injection.
“The basal trunk spray is a fast, easy and effective way to protect trees from a number of invasive and destructive pests, including EAB,” said Dr. Joe Chamberlin, regional field development manager for Valent Professional Products. “Even better, applicator training is minimal and there is no need for expensive application equipment. We hope this video will prove useful and instructional for those interested in treating trees quickly and effectively in a non-invasive fashion.”
Due to its unique chemical properties, Safari is readily absorbed through the bark into the tree’s vascular system, and then transported upward to where pests feed. A basal trunk spray with Safari has been shown in independent university trials to provide systemic control of EAB and other pests within two weeks after application, and generally requires just one application per year. Also, unlike trunk injections, which can damage the tree, the basal trunk spray is non-invasive and provides an excellent alternative for municipalities, tree care specialists and golf course superintendents who need to quickly treat a large number of trees.
In addition to EAB, Safari controls a number of sucking pests, including hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), and several species of soft and armored scale. Safari is labeled for application as a basal trunk spray, a soil injection, a soil drench and a dry granule.
