IECA executive director receives Zerosion Control Award

Denver – The International Erosion Control Association Region One (IECA) executive director, Sharan Wilson, received the November Zerosion award and was recognized as a finalist in the Zerosion Professional of the Year award.

The Zerosion Awards, hosted by the BPS Group in Granada, Spain, raises awareness of the need to restore and conserve soils, and it recognizes people and institutions that have worked to achieve social and environmental recognition.

“It is urgent to raise awareness among the population that soils are lost, and with this, the subsistence of many animal and plant species,” said Valentin Contreras, president of BPS Group. “Because ‘the soil is unable to communicate,’ the theme of this year's competition has been the need to communicate that loss of land.”

The Zerosion prize has the support of the University of Granada, the Andalusian Regional Government, the Provincial Council of Granada, the Caja Rural Foundation, the Otero Building, as well as the Chamber of Commerce and is coordinated within the calendar of international environmental events.

Other recipients of the international assembly included the winner Manuel Enrique Figueroa, professor of ecology and director of the Office of Sustainability of the University of Seville. The other finalist was Pedro Maestre, the co-owner of a dry land farm in Alcalá de Guadaira (Seville).

“The Zerosion awards recognize the work of people, entities, administrations and associations that support soil conservation. I am honored to be recognized on an international scale with other professionals who protect the soils of the earth,” Wilson said.
