The Junior Achievement banquet, held in November, has honored some of the top business and community leaders in Central Florida for the past 30 years. More than 1,300 guests attended the event, which attracted many past recipients and their colleagues. Also honored as 2008 Hall of Fame Laureates were: Alan Ginsburg of CED Companies and the late William C. France of NASCAR. University of Central Florida President John C. Hitt was bestowed the Spirit of Achievement Award.

“I’m deeply honored to share this recognition with distinguished leaders such as Dr. John Hitt, Alan Ginsburg, and the late Bill France, Jr., a truly remarkable group of community and business leaders,” Massey said. “Over the years, I’ve learned that one of the singular and absolute truths in business, as well as in life, is that no one scales the business mountain and stays there for any period of time without the help, hard work, support and encouragement of a lot of generous and unselfish people who keep you moving along the way. I am thankful for the support of my family and am proud of our Massey Services team members and all they have given back to Junior Achievement.”

Industry representatives attending the awards ceremony included Allen Fugler, executive vice president, Florida Pest Management Association, as well as John Bolanos, vice president; Bill Barrs, sales manager; James Watson, account executive; and Kurt Grade, sales manager, Univar. “We’re here to support Harvey, who has been a good friend of Univar and the pest management industry for many years,” Bolanos said.

Massey was introduced at the awards ceremony by 10-year-old Stephanie Brown of Hamilton Elementary School. She described the veteran PCO as “an inspiration for all” who has provided many life lessons to young people through his work with Junior Achievement. Mr. Massey says: “It’s okay to make a mistake once; just don’t make the same mistake twice,” according to Stephanie.

Upon accepting the award, Massey thanked his colleagues at Massey Services and acknowledged his family. “I think family is one of the most important things to have in life,” he said. “You build everything from there.” In addition, he singled out Shayla Hogan, a former member of Junior Achievement whose college education Massey Services helped fund. “I could be any more proud of anyone in the world than I am of you,” he said.

Massey Services has been supporting Junior Achievement for more than 20 years. Tony Massey, president and COO of Massey Services, is currently serving on the Board of Directors, and many of the Massey Services team members are involved through teaching projects throughout the community. In addition, Massey team members contribute to JA through an annual Bowl-A-Thon event every spring.

Harvey Massey has more than 45 years of experience in the pest control industry and is active in numerous civic organizations. He is on the Rollins College President’s Leadership Council, Past Chairman of Florida Citrus Sports, United Arts of Central Florida and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services’ Pest Control Advisory Committee. He currently serves as Chairman of the Winter Park Memorial Hospital Foundation Campaign and is a member of the Orlando/Orange County Expressway Authority.
