LONG ISLAND, N.Y. – Nassau County Consumer Affairs and the Department of Environmental Conservation have started cracking down on landscapers working without a permit.

A consumer affairs spokesperson says the county has issued 19 violations during the first few days of the operation. According to the spokesperson, the amount of unlicensed companies outnumbers the amount of licensed landscapers by approximately four to one. Nassau County representatives say the fines for landscapers operating without the proper permit can be as high as $5,000.

The owners of several licensed, legitimate landscaping companies say they fully support the crackdown. Owners say illegitimate landscapers take business away from fully licensed companies operating according to the law.
