FALLS CHURCH, Va. - The Irrigation Association (IA) offers a Certified Irrigation Contractor Program that helps consumers get the quality and competence they deserve in a contractor. The IA certifies contractors as experienced and trained professionals working to meet irrigation industry standards.
The IA said that each year thousands of homeowners decide to install new and/or upgrade existing lawn and landscape irrigation systems, and the proper operation of these systems hinges on a professional installation and proper maintenance of the system.
"Choosing the right contractor plays a vital role in the performance and reliability of an irrigation system,'' said Tom Kimmell, executive director of The Irrigation Association.
Kimmell suggested that homeowners ask for and verify IA certifications and licensing for the state, county or city levels when choosing a contractor. The IA offers the following checklist to consumers when they are searching for a contractor, which can also be used as a guideline for irrigation contractors to follow when selling their services:
- Look for commitment to the industry. Is the contractor a member of local and national trade organizations? Membership indicates that the contractor keeps up on irrigation technology and is proud of the profession.
- Look for professionalism. The contractor should return calls promptly and arrive on time for appointments. Look for a contractor with a neat appearance and a well-maintained vehicle.
- Ask for proof of insurance. The contractor should have a worker's compensation insurance policy, a general liability insurance policy and automobile insurance. For residential work, general liability limits should range between $300,000 and $500,000.
- Ask for references similar to your project size and budget. Contact these references and ask questions. Did the contractor stay within budget? Were they satisfied with the work and would they recommend the contractor to others? If possible, go see these landscapes in person.
- Ask for a written bid. The bid should include a scaled plan, a breakdown of system components by cost and warranty information. The contractor should attach all license, reference, certification and insurance information.
- Compare the bids. Be alert of bids far less than other contractors. Cutting corners will limit reliability and can undermine the quality of a landscape. In other words, you get what you pay for.
Homeowners continue to invest a time in choosing the appropriate service professionals. Therefore, it is important for irrigation contractors to be able to satisfy the above requests not only to prove their abilities but also to prove their professionalism and commitment to their work.
